Hailing from Vancouver, BC, Miles grew up in a filmmaking family and found that he had a natural passion for storytelling. Straight out of college, Miles won Best Student Film at the Toronto International Film Festival. The following year, Miles was recognized at the Young Directors Awards in Cannes, winning first prize for his interactive film, Carl Y’s Café, which went on to be screened at the United Nations to help ratify the Convention of Rights For People With Disabilities.
In 2015, his next short film, The Statistical Analysis of Your Failing Relationship, went on to win the Jury Award at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival.
Miles’ beautiful, poignant, and arrestingly meditative music video for the Leon Bridges hit “River” went on to be nominated for Best Music Video at the 69th Grammy Awards and went on to win the Best Music Video Jury Award at SXSW. The following year, Miles directed a campaign for SqaureSpace starring John Malkovich, which earned an Emmy for Outstanding Commercial and a Cannes Lion for Direction.
Miles’ most recent music video for Jay-Z’s “Smile” took home the Grand Prix For Entertainment Lions in Music at the 2018 Cannes Lions Festival and the Webby Award for Best Performance in Film. The film offers an introspective look into the life of Jay-Z’s mother, Gloria Carter, raising Jay in Brooklyn’s Marcy Projects, as she struggles to outwardly embrace her sexuality in a world that doesn’t provide space for her to freely express herself.
Miles has been twice nominated for Commercial Director of the Year by the Director’s Guild of America. He currently resides in Brooklyn, New York.
